In the heart of Europe, the Hauts-de-France is the leading railway region
It represents :
- 40% of French railway industry activity
- 14,000 professionals
- about 200 businesses including international leaders such as Alstom, Bombardier, Siemens, Eurotunnel and a strong network of SMB (equipment manufacturers, design offices, engineering, etc.)
- 60% of the region’s railway activity is based in the Valenciennes area
Many actors participate in the structuring and development of the sector
Among these actors :
- The Association des Industries Ferroviaires (AIF) comprises 130 members representing the entirety of the railway system: engineering, infrastructure, rolling stock – passenger – freight, control-command, maintenance, tests, certification, training, etc.
- RAILENIUM, the only Institut de Recherche Technologique in France dedicated to the railway sector and infrastructure performance in particular
- i-Trans, an innovation centre for sustainable land transport focusing in particular on railway infrastructure, rail rolling stock, freight, and passenger mobility
- The European Union Agency for Railways (AFE/ERA), which works to develop technical standards and international marking codes in order to ensure railway security
- The Centre d’Essais Ferroviaire (CEF), which allows all types of railway rolling stock to be tested for approval (speed, endurance, autopilot, electromagnetic compatibility, etc.)
- The Agence de Certification Ferroviaire (CERTIFER), an independent agency with more than 400 experts and an international leader in the evaluation of railway and urban guided transport products and systems to ensure their interoperability, safety, and availability

The region offers several very specialized higher education courses in railways developed with industrialists (on-board communication in transport, rail engineering)
